Notes about Food
Hi, YERTians!
I have a couple of thoughts about food that I’d like to share with you. Consider these two points:
Point 1: There might be an interesting new adjustment to the Farm Bill in the works. Take a look at the FRESH plan here. It seems that old-fashioned subsidies are funding all the wrong parts of our food pyramid, powerfully illustrated here, and that a fresh look at subsidies is long overdue. Will the FRESH plan make the necessary changes? I had no idea, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. In the meantime, meat and dairy products are more heavily subsidized than fruit and grains.
Point 2: A recent study in England claims that organic food is more nutritious than non-organic foods. I believe it, but I’d like to take it a step further: I’d like to see a study that looks at the cost per nutrient delivered for organic and non-organic foods. If you figure that you’re paying per unit of anti-oxidant or unit of a certain vitamin rather than simply per “piece of fruit,” then the costs will likely seem more justified. It might even cost less to get your daily nutrients from organic foods. Take a look at the article here.
That’s all for tonight.
Peace Out from Hawaii…
